In case you are not aware, businesses which have suffered as a result of the utility works in Bridge Street and Castle Street may be eligible for financial compensation.

Southern Gas Networks (SGN) has a scheme that compensates for loss of profit. There are a number of criteria to be satisfied including that annual turnover must be less than £1.439 million at 2009/10 prices and that the claimed loss of profit must be at least 2.5% of annual turnover (minimum claim is £500). Further details of the scheme including a claim form can be found on www.scotiagasnetworks.co.uk Guidance can also be obtained from the local SNG office by telephone on 01202 545589.

There is also a possibility that businesses affected by these works can protect their interests by submitting a proposal to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to alter the Rating List. In considering such proposals the VOA would assess whether the works have had a sufficiently negative impact and were of sufficient longevity to affect the annual rental value of the property. Further details including an application form can be found on www.voa.gov.uk The local VOA office can also give guidance over the telephone on 01202 702045

It would not be appropriate for the Council to provide advice on schemes operated by other organisation although we would suggest that the earliest possible consideration is given to eligibility criteria and general guidance including criteria relating to timing. If you have any questions about either of these two schemes, please contact SGN or the VOA direct.

Following a meeting with SGN last Friday, it appears that Bridge Street and Castle Street will be opened to through traffic by the end of this week as originally planned. There may however be a need for temporary traffic lights in Bridge Street during part of next week as service connections to individual properties are completed.

The works in Castle Street and on Waterloo Bridge have already been completed.
I am sure that Southern Gas Networks, Scottish & Southern Energy and Dorset County Council would like to thank you for your forbearance during their works and I do hope that your business resumes normal trading conditions very soon."
