Christchurch General Election candidates announced
The May 2010 General Election candidates for the Christchurch constituency have been announced. They are: Christopher Robert Chope (Conservative) Rob Deeks (Labour) Martyn John Hurll (Liberal Democrat) David John Williams (United Kingdom Independence Party) In the last General Election in 2005 Christopher Chope polled 28,208 votes (54.7%) and had a majority of 15,559 over the Liberal Democrat candidate (Leslie Coman) who received 12,649 votes (24.5%). The Labour candidate (Jim King) received 8,051 votes (15.6%) and the UKIP candidate (David Hughes) received 2,657 votes (5.2%). The turnout was 69.1% of the electorate. The Christchurch constituency includes the whole Borough of Christchurch and parts of East Dorset, including Ferndown, Parley, West Moors, Longham, Staplehill and St Leonards and St Ives. There have been some boundary changes since the 2005 election, with Verwood now being part of the Dorset North constituency and parts of Parley, Longham and Staplehill moving from Dorset North to the Christchurch constituency. Polling stations at 45 locations (26 in the Borough of Christchurch, 19 in East Dorset) will be open on 6 May from 7am to 10pm. Christchurch residents wishing to check which polling station to use can ring 01202 495130; East Dorset residents should ring 01202 886201. The count will take place overnight on 6/7 May at Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre with the result expected at around 3.30am on 7 May. |
