A number of authorities and organisations are joining together to increase awareness of what police and local agencies do to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in Christchurch as part of a nationwide initiative called Not In My Neighbourhood Week which runs from 2 to 6 November 2009. It is a Home Office initiative which encourages local communities to get together to engage with the police and local agencies and play their part in tackling crime and anti-social behaviour. People attending the roadshows will be able to discuss any concerns they may have and get a lot of useful advice on keeping themselves and their homes safe. The event at Highcliffe clifftop car park will include demonstrations by Dorset Fire & Rescue showing how they extricate victims of road accidents from their vehicles and local schoolchildren are being invited along to see the effects of speeding or dangerous driving. Although Christchurch is one of the safest places in the country, the partners involved see the week as an important way of showing how crime is tackled and also reducing the fear of crime. Sgt Malcolm Warriner, Christchurch Safer Neighbourhood Sergeant, said: I feel this is an extremely important event as it gives us the opportunity to show how the eight Christchurch Safer Neighbourhood Teams can be contacted and how we work with our crime reduction partners to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.” Cllr Ray Nottage, portfolio holder for a Safe and Healthy Community at Christchurch Council, added: “The roadshows will show how we at Christchurch Council are working with all community safety agencies and how successful that partnership has been over the last two years in bringing down levels of crime and reducing fear of crime.” Barry Sherwin, Senior Co-ordinator of Christchurch Homewatch, said: “Homewatch sees this event as a way of letting all residents know what we are about, how we work alongside other partners to keep Christchurch safe and help keep crime levels at some of the lowest in the UK, and to promote membership as we desperately need co-ordinators.” |
