Love Food, Hate Waste Campaign

Love Food, Hate Waste Campaign Christchurch Borough Council and Dorset County Council joined forces to promote the ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’ campaign at Sainsbury’s in Christchurch. The campaign encourages local people to reduce the amount of produce that they throw away. It is estimated that around a third of the food we buy is wasted. Last year in Dorset, an estimated 34,000 tonnes of food waste was sent to landfill sites, at a disposal cost of over £1.8 million. Rotting food also generates greenhouse gases. Officers from both councils were joined by Sainsbury’s staff and 2CR FM’s Black Thunder crew - along with a giant strawberry! - to hand out cookbook folders with recipe cards for ways to use leftovers. Food fans are being challenged to pick up their wooden spoons and raid the fridge to compete for the title of ‘Best leftovers cook in Dorset’. Five competition entries will be turned into recipe cards to go into the cookbook folder with an overall winner chosen as the best leftovers cook in Dorset.  The competition closing date is 20 February.  Any Christchurch resident who missed the promotion at Sainsbury’s can find out more at a stand in Saxon Square on Friday 6 February from 10am to 3pm. Further roadshows are also taking place throughout the rest of the county For more information about the Love Food, Hate Waste campaign visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/dorset.
