Next Mayor of Christchurch announces charities
The Mayor Elect of Christchurch, Cllr Nick Geary, has announced the charities that he will support during his term of office. They are: • Christchurch Activities for Young People (CAYP) • First Opportunities • Portfield School CAYP provides opportunities for school children to engage in a wide range of activities during the school holidays, not only keeping them interested and enhancing their education, but also allowing parents to know that their children are in safe environments. First Opportunities is a unique therapy playgroup for young children with special needs, something which is not funded by the government. Experienced key-workers use play to stimulate the child’s physical and learning development, with each child being individually assessed. Portfield School is an independent day and boarding school operated by The Wessex Autistic Society for up to 70 children and young people on the autism spectrum. Cllr Geary said: “I believe it’s extremely important to support children and young people as well as those organisations who work with children with special needs. All three of my chosen charities cater for local children and their particular local needs. “I do hope that during my year of office the support I get from the residents of Christchurch will offer these charities some financial advantages.” As well as supporting these three organisations, Cllr Geary intends to keep a sum of money aside to help other young people’s organisations who may need some small amount of financial assistance. Cllr Geary will be appointed Mayor at Christchurch’s Annual Council meeting on 18 May. |
