Work on a project which will not only encourage sailing teams training for the Olympic Games but will also leave a lasting legacy for Christchurch people is due to start soon at Gundimore promenade near Mudeford Quay. The work will: • Provide a new shared pedestrian and cycle track between Mudeford Quay and Avon Beach • Improve beach access for everybody, including disabled people • Allow for better access for licensed sailors to take dinghies down to the water’s edge for launching • Provide better training facilities for sailing teams taking part in the 2012 Olympic Games. This will give a boost to the local economy • Give a lasting legacy for the local community following the Games • Allow for storage of boat trolleys and dinghies at recessed parts of the new track. The work will take place in two phases: Phase 1 – starting at the beginning of September until October – will provide an access track from Avon Beach. This work will be completed by Christchurch Council’s coastal protection team. Phase 2 – starting in November and lasting a scheduled 16 weeks – will build a reinforced concrete extension to the current terracing 140 metres long. This work will be undertaken by Bourne Building Services. All work will be completed by Easter 2010. Cllr Sally Derham Wilkes, chairman of Christchurch Council’s Community Services Committee, said: “We are very grateful to everybody who responded to our consultation on the best way to go about providing this valuable new facility. “We are confident that the work will put us in a much better position to attract sailing teams to Christchurch to take part in pre-Olympic training which would give a huge boost to the local economy. The new access will also make it much easier for local sailors to launch their boats and will provide an easier route for walkers and cyclists along the promenade and onto the beach.” |
