Work to open up Saxon Square due to take place
Work to remove the outdated planter at the entrance to Saxon Square from the High Street, behind the Old Town Hall, will be taking place from Tuesday 7th September. The removal will lead to improved views from the High Street as well as opening up access to the Square. The six cycle stands currently next to the planter will be replaced with eight new ones in the High Street. The work is scheduled to be completed by Friday 17th September and a compound will be created around the planter to create a safe working and storage area for the contractor.Because of this, it will be necessary to cancel the Thursday market, which is normally held in Saxon Square, on Thursday 9 September. Although the size of the compound will be reduced as work progresses, it may also be necessary to cancel the Saxon Square element of the Monday market on 13th September and the Thursday market on 16th September.Cllr Sally Derham Wilkes, portfolio holder for business and tourism at Christchurch Council, said: “The planter really has had its day and removing it will make the access to Saxon Square much more pleasant. It will also mean that the new coffee shop coming to the corner unit will be able to have table and chairs outside, giving the Square a more continental feel.” |
