Christchurch Beach cleans - Volunteers needed

Christchurch has been named the Best Coastal Town in the South & South East in Bloom competition. Judges also awarded the town a Silver Gilt certificate for its floral and environmental efforts.

In addition, the Borough won two discretionary awards. The Chairman’s Award went to Stanpit Marsh Information Centre, with the judges remarking: “The new Visitor Centre at Stanpit Marsh with its innovative design is a superb example of an environmentally sustainable building”. The Community Gardens Award was given to Priory Quay, where the judges praised the excellent landscaping and the new planters.

Certificates of Excellence were awarded to Highcliffe Castle, Christchurch Harbour Hotel, Roeshot Hill Allotment Association, Ye Olde George Inn, Priory Quay Residents’ Association, The New Forest Perfumery and Steamer Point Information Centre.

Judges visited the town in July and were shown round by the Council’s Tourism Manager, Ann Simon, and Parks & Countryside Manager, Clive Sinden.

The remarks from the judges said: “Christchurch has long been renowned for quality summer flower displays and this year once again all parts of the town and surrounding roundabouts all looked superb. Highlights of the entry included the very successful efforts of the volunteers at the rail station, continued from last year, where new floral displays and attractive murals make such an impact. The new Visitor Centre at Stanpit Marsh is a credit to all involved with its planning and completion.”

Cllr Colin Jamieson, portfolio holder for Protecting the Environment at Christchurch Council, said: “This is again a superb achievement for the Borough. The Coastal Town category was a new one for us this year, so to win it on our first attempt is tremendous. I would like to thank everyone - council officers, businesses and residents - who contributed to this success.”
