Police in Christhurch are issuing a reminder to locals and visitors to the town that areas of the town centre are designated an alcohol free zone. The designated area is signposted and covers Christchurch town centre and extends along Bridge Street towards Purewell. Surrounding roads in Purewell are also included in the zone.

In this area, police constables and police community support officers are authorised to request that people stop drinking and hand over any containers of alcohol in their possession. Officers are also permitted to dispose of any alcohol found.

Anyone who fails to comply is committing an offence and could be arrested.

PC Leo Glendon, said: "As Safer Neighbourhood Officers, we are committed to improving the quality of life for Dorset's residents. This includes enforcing the prohibition of activities which jeopardise their feelings of safety. We hope this will serve as a practical reminder of the boundaries of the alcohol free zone in Christchurch and will encourage consideration for residents of the town."

Local authorities are permitted to designate alcohol free zones under Section 12 of the Criminal Justice and Police Act of 2001
