“Don’t pedal on pavements” is the message from Safer Neighbourhood Officers in Christchurch as they target cyclists who ride on the pavement through the town. The problem has been highlighted by local residents through PACT (Partners and Communities Together). As a consequence, Christchurch Safer Neighbourhood Teams will be out on patrol in the town centre in the coming weeks with a view to warning and, in some cases, issuing fines to offenders.PCSO Sarah Downs of Christchurch Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team, who is organising the initiative, said: “In a town centre, such as Christchurch, which is busy with pedestrians during the day, riding on the pavement can be dangerous.“The issue has been raised by residents as a PACT priority and, as such, we are tackling the problem head-on by getting out on the streets and taking offenders to account.“The message is simple - don’t pedal on pavements.”Cycling on the pavement contravenes Section 72 of the Highways Act 1835 and carries a fine of £30, if caught.
