Quomps pool opens for final paddle before planned SplashPark replaces it

The paddling pool on the Quomps at Christchurch Quay has opened for its final season. Plans are now well under way for a modern SplashPark to replace it from summer 2010.

Christchurch Council has worked with members of the local community in recent weeks to maintain, clean and refurbish the pool in readiness for its final fling. The Council is now progressing the new scheme which will see it replaced by a SplashPark in a design fit for the 21st century, incorporating a range of water and wet play features and paddling pool.

Funding for the SplashPark has come from the government’s Play Builder project along with £100,000 already allocated from Christchurch Council.

Ashley Harman, Property & Engineering Services Manager at Christchurch Council, said: “When the plug is finally pulled on the paddling pool in September, work will start shortly afterwards on the projected SplashPark so that it will be ready to be opened at the start of the summer season next year.

“The paddling pool was opened in the 1940s and has become difficult to maintain, so it really is time for a more exciting 21st century SplashPark to take its place, but one which is sensitive to the surroundings of the Quomps and Christchurch Quay.”

A planning application for the SplashPark will be submitted soon.

Local community spokesman Adrian Dwyer emphasised the fact that people in the community have been very supportive. “We started a Facebook page on the internet and had literally hundreds of messages of support,” he said, “many of them from grandparents who want to enjoy the new feature with their grandchildren.

“As well as the play items, there will be seating for people to relax in a tranquil environment so there is something for everyone, irrespective of age. Unlike the current pool, which is closed during the winter months, the splash park will be pleasant 365 days of the year. We are all looking forward to something that is sure to be safe, fun, exciting, challenging and enjoyable.”
