The second annual Fit Christchurch Fun Day tempted thousands of people down to the Quomps at Christchurch Quay to take part in fun fitness activities. The first event last year was so successful that organisers immediately signed up to a repeat performance this year and they were not disappointed as it was estimated that double the number of people visited the event this year. With more than 75 stalls and attractions ranging from scuba to salsa and bouncy castle to boxing, visitors had more than their fair share of things to keep them occupied. The weather was warm and sunny, which was a bonus for those hardy souls who volunteered to get dunked into the Dunk Tank. Included in the victims were two teachers and a police officer who bravely tried to stay high and dry while people throwing at the target had other ideas. Children had a fun time trying out the inflatable assault course, the bouncy boxing, the bucking bronco and the NEOS machine as well as testing their skills on a climbing wall and penalty shoot-out. Throughout the day a programme of exciting displays held the attention of the crowds who were treated to taekwondo, martial arts, boxing, salsa, fitness and belly dancing. The event organiser, Pete Griffiths from Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre, said: “We are sure that everyone who came down to join in the fun had a great time. We would like to thank all of the local clubs and businesses who took part and helped to make the day such a success. We really intend to make this an annual event as it has proved to be so popular with everyone in the community.” The Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Nick Geary, who opened and closed the event, added: “It was encouraging that so many local organisations came to promote the wide range of sporting activities already available here. The Council and the Community Partnership are working together to make Christchurch a fitter and healthier place through the Fit Christchurch project and it’s good to see so many people supporting it.” Many people signed up to be members of Fit Christchurch on the day and will benefit from a range of offers and discounts from local companies.
