More than 100 people attended a meeting at Mudeford Wood Community Centre in Christchurch which was organised to explain the measures being taken to protect the coastline in Christchurch and Poole Bays. The meeting was chaired by David Harlow from Bournemouth Borough Council and featured speakers from New Forest District Council, Natural England and maritime consultants Royal Haskoning Ltd talking about the problem of climate change and how this will affect coastlines. They also discussed the Shoreline Management Plan which covers developments in the management of changing coastlines.

The speakers were followed by a question and answer session in which members of the public were invited to pose their questions, some of which were around the subject of global warming and the potential threats caused by rising sea levels. Following the meeting, David Harlow said: "We were delighted by the number of people who turned out on such a wet and windy day. The meeting went very well and a lot of interesting issues were raised. It shows that we have to think extremely widely about all the factors which are involved in the future evolution of our coastline."

The main objectives of the Shoreline Management Plan are:

1. To set out the risks of coastal flooding and erosion for Poole and Christchurch Bays and Harbours over the next 100 years

2. To identify preferred policies for managing those risks, and the consequences of putting them into practice

3. To inform others in order that future land use takes account of the risks.
