Thousands enjoy another Fit Christchurch Fun Day

More than five thousand people came down to the Quomps at Christchurch Quay to take part in the third annual Fit Christchurch Fun Day.

Despite torrential rain early in the morning, the weather was fine for most of the day allowing people to take advantage of the many activities which had been arranged by Christchurch Council and Christchurch Community Partnership as part of the Fit Christchurch campaign.

Children enjoyed the 300-foot inflatable assault course, the Bucking Bronco, the bouncy castle, Battlefield Live and the climbing wall, many of them lining up to try them again and again.

Throughout the day demonstrations of fitness-related activities were held, including Zumba dance, a fitness boot camp, Taekwondo and even belly dancing. Spectators were encouraged to take part in many of the demonstrations.

The dunk tank was a popular spectacle and many brave souls volunteered to be plunged into the icy water. Inspector Lance Cliff from Christchurch Police was the first to go in, helped by a shot from the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Sue Spittle.

The day came to a sudden end at around 3.30 when the heavens opened to torrential rain.

Pete Griffiths, Operations Manager at Two Riversmeet Leisure Complex, one of the organisers of the day, said: “We were keeping an eye out for the weather as the forecast wasn’t great, but in the end the day was mostly fine and everyone seemed to have a great time.

“This has been a really successful event for the past three years, with a number of people taking part in activities and signing up to join groups which they may not have heard of before. We’re looking forward to another Fun Day next September!”
