Rain which started to fall just before the Christmas lights were switched on did not dampen the spirits of the thousands who turned up for Christchurch Christmas Festival. Father Christmas and his reindeer, who had flown in from Lapland, braved the wet weather as they paraded from Peeks Partystore down Bargates to the High Street for the switch-on. They were led in procession by pupils from Burton Primary School who were dressed as angels and elves. The switch-on went without a hitch as the Mayor, Cllr David Flagg, along with David and Caroline from Heart’s breakfast show, led the crowd in the countdown. After the event the Mayor said: “We had a fantastic turnout despite the atrocious weather. It goes to show the great community spirit we have here in Christchurch – long may it continue.” The Christmas Festival had seen the Christmas Market in the High Street throughout the day and a full programme of entertainment had been planned by Christchurch Community Partnership in the marquee in Saxon Square. Christchurch Music Centre’s senior wind band got the programme off to a great start and the whole day saw something for everyone with performers of all ages from Mudeford Infants to the U3A Vintage Brass Band. Youngsters were entertained by Mervin the Magician and Treehouse Theatre while fans of dance enjoyed everything from Ring of Eight’s formal dances from the 17th Century up to Pure Funk’s energetic modern display. During the afternoon two Crystal Creatures from a far-off land wandered around the High Street and Bargates entertaining passers-by. Meanwhile entertainment in Bargates included Messy Christmas at the Baptist Church and Zooma’s very own High Street Musical cast. Paul Riley, chairman of the Christmas Festival organising committee, said: “There really was a great selection of events and performances throughout the day for everyone to enjoy and I would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped make the event such a success as well as all of the sponsors who contributed to making the event possible." |
