 | | St Catherine's HillJust three miles from Christchurch town centre, off one of the main roads to and from the town, is the St Catherine’s Hill district. Whilst it is mainly a residential area, it is built at the base of the hill which gives it its name. Legend tells us it is here that a church was to be built but efforts were foiled when the building materials were repeatedly moved down into the town. It was felt that it was divine intervention and as a consequence the church was built in town, that church being the famous Christchurch Priory. There is a parade of local shops and a new community hall, used by a wide variety of local groups. St Catherine’s Hill itself is a popular place for walkers and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) where protected lizard species and other wildlife can be found. | |
