So much happens in this jewel of a town that a few paragraphs just aren’t enough. Christchurch is a vibrant town full of independent shops and some national chains. It is becoming famous for the quality of its restaurants and holds the best Food and Wine Festival on the south coast, held each May. It is the home to a large, regular Monday Street Market, when the High Street is closed to traffic; there are regular Thursday craft markets throughout the summer and a popular monthly Farmers’ Market. The history of this town is fascinating and there has been a settlement here since the Bronze Age. The town is dominated by its beautiful Priory Church. This cathedral-sized building is over 900 years old and gave the town its name, having previously been called Twynham, meaning ‘between the rivers’. There are other ancient buildings, such as the Castle, the Constables House and historic Place Mill, which is named in the Domesday Book. You can come to Christchurch town centre to shop, to eat, to walk, sightsee or simply to relax. There is a Quayside where ferries shuttle people to and from Mudeford. The town regularly shines in the Britain in Bloom competition and is known for its stunning floral displays, whether hanging baskets, flower towers, roadside barrier baskets or in some of the towns parks, including the award-winning New Zealand Gardens. There is so much more. Christchurch has as its motto ‘Where Time is Pleasant’ and it certainly lives up to its name.
