Burton

Set within Christchurch Borough and just over a mile from the town centre is Burton village. It is a residential area with a mix of modern housing on the estate, individual detached houses and bungalows plus a range of pretty thatched properties. Served by two local shops and a post office there is also a doctor’s surgery, two churches and two pubs. There is a village primary school, a day nursery and pre-school playgroup. This is a true community and there are numerous groups and societies to join for people of all ages.
The centre of activity settles around the village green where numerous community events take place, including an annual carol service, Easter services and a Veteran’s Day celebration. There is an active Parish Council which organises village spring and autumn clean ups where locals join in to keep the village neat and tidy.
The village green and surrounds form a conservation area and there are two grand houses, Whitehayes House and Burton Hall, both of which are Grade II listed and now form private apartments. Another notable house is situated on Salisbury Road where poet Robert Southey lived briefly and it is thought that the cottage was the inspiration for the fairy story, Goldilocks and the three bears!
