Mudeford

One of the most popular and picturesque parts of Christchurch, Mudeford is famous for the Quay. Childhood memories of crabbing at the Quay are told for generations. Mudeford Quay sits at the entrance to Christchurch Harbour, where the water passes swiftly through the ‘Run’. Across is the beautiful sandspit of Mudeford Sandbank where rows of colourful beach huts stand out against the sky.
Mudeford has a long history, mainly involving the Battle of Mudeford in 1784, where local smugglers fought with Revenue Officers resulting in a fatal shooting. These days, visitors can buy fresh fish from the fish stall, or enjoy refreshments at the cafe or the historic Haven Inn.
Mudeford is also the location for Highcliffe Sailing Club which has been chosen as an official training venue for countries prepaing for the sailing events due to take place along the coast at Weymouth in 2012.
On the harbour side a new addition to the local culinary scene is the Rhodes South Restaurant, part of the chain owned by TV celebrity chef Gary Rhodes, and situated in the grounds of the newly refurbished Christchurch Harbour Hotel. Other places to stay are local Bed and Breakfast establishments, apartments and the Sandhills Holiday Park. Two small parades of shops serve locals and visitors alike.
